Making Displays for Exhibits

Taran Govindu, Troop 154 , Fremont

We had a 3 part project: restoring the old sundial for Mattos Elementary, creating a new equatorial sundial, and creating a stool for the new sundial. To restore the old sundial, we first repainted the stand and replaced the metal support beams and rusted lag screws. Next, we sanded down both faces of the sundial, repainted it with yellow, and added in designs and metal numbers. To make the stool, we cut short pieces of wood and used wooden screws to screw them together. Once it was built and sanded, we applied multiple coats of white paint.

For the new sundial, we first had to cut out multiple curved pieces of plywood to make the meridian ring, circular base, and equatorial ring support. We then stuck them together using wood glue and wood screws, and once the glue dried and the wood was sanded, we painted the sundial orange and yellow. To make the equatorial ring, we screwed a thin metal sheet to the wooden support to keep it in its curved shape, and then used glue to stick painted wooden numbers on top to mark the hours of the day. To make the gnom nom, we drilled holes in the meridian ring at a specific angle so that a pole could fit through and cast a shadow. This sundial required careful measurements to ensure it was functional.
