Science today is more directed by "research and development" or R and D.  This refers to government, industry, or non-profit laboratories that can follow different experimental paths.  With each new piece of information, they might redirect their research.  In other words, the project develops and the end product may be completely different then first started.  Research and development is a way to get more creative ideas and more products.

Research is like art.  Both artists and researchers have to think about their goal.  They both have a vision of the end product.   Although the product of both an artist and researchers are different, the thought processes are very similar.  The great artists of the world create many sketches before they actually produced their art.   No matter how talented a person is, developing a “masterpiece” takes thought, research, and hard work.
