OVERCOMING GRAVITY - PLASTIC BOTTLE
OBJECTIVE:
Design an aerodynamic object that will move in the wind.
BACKGROUND:
This activity will have the students
design an aerodynamic plastic soda bottle. Show them an example of
what an example of an end product will be like. The key points for
students to acknowledge, is that wind has to be "captured" and made to
work. For example a pin wheel or wind mill.
There are many designs that students can
make. They can decorate them if they like. Each student can
make one if they bring their own bottle.
PROCEDURE:
Materials - exacto knife,
plastic bottle, fish string, ornaments
First design how you think an aerodynamic
plastic bottle will look like. Remember you plastic flaps to
"capture" wind, so the bottle can move around. After your teacher
"approves" your design, then make the design. In your conclusions
state whether the bottle was an aerodynamic success.
PROBLEM:
How can a plastic bottle capture the wind?
