OVERCOMING GRAVITY

OVERVIEW:
This activity takes the student through all developmental levels of learning.  Making kites enables the students to include all their sensory motor skills in making observations.  Students will conceptualize as well as construct models.  The end result will be for students to apply the basic concepts of design and flight to make an original design for a kite.

 INTRODUCTION:
This can be a 2 part lab that has students experiment with different objects to see how aerodynamic they are.  There are two labs that outline how things move with the wind.

The first lab has students looking at different frisbees.  They will test three different types and analyze the frisbees for distance in flight and whether one flies better than another.

The second lab has students design an aerodynamic plastic soda bottle to make a wind ornament.  They will use an exacto knife and a bottle to design this ornament.

VOCABULARY:

aerodynamics
design
