The Project: My project was to secure thirteen
8-foot long railroad ties used as stairs down a steep slope.
These stairs served two purposes, a safe way for kids to access
pond C from the main office and to provide an area of erosion
control. To secure these steps, it consists of four steps:
digging, leveling, compacting, and securing. First, we would
dig into the slope to create a flat area for each stair. Then we
would place the stair on the flat part and check the level.
Depending on the level, we would add and compact gravel to
ensure the stair was perfectly level. Once the stair was
perfectly level, we would hammer four 40-inch rebar inside each
of the railroad ties. We repeated this process for 13 stairs
which took us a total of 22 hours to complete.
Who Helped: My project was only successful because of the help and resources I received from my troop, friends, family, and Dr. Blueford. I worked with my dad and Mr. Juby to take precise measurements of the slope and calculate the spacing between each step. My fellow scouts were extremely helpful when enduring through all the labor intensive work for hours. In the end, the project was a reflection of all the help I received from the people mentioned above.d Mr. Juby to take precise measurement of the slope and calculate the spacing between each step.
