My Eagle project was to build two picnic tables for Tule Ponds
to use. It gives volunteers, students, and anyone else a place
to sit down, set their things on, or work on. The end result
was two sturdy, safe, and easy-to-use picnic tables that are
ideal for outdoor settings. Before the build process, I prepared
and cut the wood for these tables to their appropriate size to
be ready for building. I also marked and drilled the holes that
would be needed later. My fellow scouts and I then assembled the
combined over 200 feet of lumber together into the two picnic
tables. We faced many challenges with knots in the wood, tricky
placement of the half-built table while attaching legs, and
needing to redrill holes to match new placements and keep
everything level. On the second day we sanded the tables to get
rid of any possible splinters, filled in holes with wood filler
and scrap wood, and sanded down edges to make the table safer
for children. Then we painted the entirety of both tables to
give it a clean look and protect it from the elements.
There were many scouts who helped out on
this project over the course of two days. On the first there were 8
scouts and on the second there were six. All of them were a huge
help. Their experience with woodworking beforehand, their excitement
to help out with things like with drilling, and their attention to
detail helped make my Eagle project very successful. There were a
big range of scouts, from new scouts to ones who were already Eagle,
and all of them helped a lot.
