Mud Slough  is  part of the Laguna Creek Watershed, but because it is so close to the San Francisco Bay its habitat is very different. It is affected by tidal action, contains salty water, and supports different vegetation and wildlife than other parts of Laguna Creek.  The fauna and flora changes from brackish to hypersaline in some areas.  Salt evaporators are present on one side as the slough meanders into the larger Coyote Creek, before it empties into the San Francisco Bay.
There are no schools adjacent to this section of the creek, but the area is part of an industrial park which houses several large companies, including Lam Research Corporation and New United Motoring Manufacturing Incorporated, two of the largest employers in the Fremont area.
