Creating a Learning Center near Mission Creek Prahlad Vangeepuram
Canchi Through my discussions with Ms. Alexander, a science teacher at Hopkins, I learned that, before the pandemic, the teachers used an area adjoining the creek as part of their curriculum. They taught students about different species and their corresponding habitats, and even sampled water from the creek to study the microorganisms living within. However, after the floods in 2021, a tree fell in the area they previously used and blocked access to a unique and exciting learning environment for the students. This project aimed to remake Hopkins' outdoor classroom by clearing out an area of shrubs between the Mission Creek trail and the Mission Creek and building benches to place in the clearing. The project consisted of clearing out an area to use for the classroom, building four benches and a signpost, and securing the built products into the ground. Then, wood chips were brought from a local tree company to layer the clearing and prevent future weed growth. I want to thank Dr. Blueford for all of her support on this project and her help in providing the tools needed to complete this project; it would not have been possible without all of her assistance. After the project's completion, the site immediately began serving the members of the local Mission community as a resting location during their trail walks. I hope this newly constructed outdoor classroom continues to serve as a helpful addition to the local community and serves the students of Hopkins for years to come."
