LESSON 1.  Collecting Data

SCIENTIFIC METHOD

Scientific, mathematical, or engineering discoveries don't just "happen."  After researching an area, a problem may develop.  Researchers obtain new or refined information by incorporating previous knowledge. The scientific method is actually a series of techniques used to solve a defined problem.  The technique includes observation, collecting data, and interpreting data using  mathematically measurable experiments, Overall the method used has to be based on logic or principles of reasoning.  Many researchers work in teams so they can brainstorm and develop experiments to collect data that is then analyzed.

Different sciences have different approaches in creating solutions.   Sometimes the hardest task for researches is to state the problem and then designing an experiment.   All experiments need to include mathematic principles in order to find a valid solution.  Different sciences require different levels of mathematical skills.  Physics requires the highest mathematics skills.  Physics is the quantification of the physical world, so physicists develop many mathematical models.  Biology and geology are more qualitative sciences where mathematical skills used are more statistical and measuring properties for comparison.
