PERIODIC TABLE
Lesson 1 - Page 6

As new elements are created they go through a series of confirmations by other research groups.  The new elements that are finding now can only manufacture “atoms” of the element that last seconds.  There is research done throughout the world to find ”atoms” of new elements.   A suspected new element is given a placeholder on the Periodic Table. The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), an international chemistry organization founded in 1919 then decides on a permanent name.  In 2008  there are 6 elements going through the process.  These include Ununbium (Uub, 112), Ununtrium (Uut,113), Ununquadium (Uuq,114), Ununpentium (Uup,115) Ununhexium (Uuh,116), and  Ununoctium (Uuo, 118).  There is one provisional name for a synthetic element not yet proven, but predicted (Ununseptium, Uus,117).  Depending on how old the Periodic Table you are using will depend on these additions.

Why is it important to find these elements?  As we explore space and find new materials, there might be just one that could solve Earthly problems.  For example, one undiscovered element might be found on another planet that could solve some of our energy problems and help humankind continue to exist.
