SOLUTIONS VS. MIXTURES - LAB

PROBLEM:
What is the difference between a solution and a mixture?

HYPOTHESIS:

MATERIALS:
Food coloring, iron sulfate, funnel, coffee filter, 2 beakers (250 ml), mortar and pestle, water

Fold filter paper in half.  Fold filter paper in half again to make a quarter.  After you fold it place it in the funnel so it is ready to use.

  1. Crush an iron sulfate tablet by using a mortar and pestle until very fine.  Mix with 100 ml of water. Use your filter paper in the funnel as shown in the diagram.  Slowly pour the liquid into the funnel.  Describe what happens.

  2. Mix a little food coloring in 100 ml of water.  Filter the water.  Describe what happens.

  3. Could you predict what would happen if you mixed salt with water and filtered it?

Draw a picture of your lab set up for filtration

CONCLUSIONS:
Can you describe the difference between the two filtrations?
