Long Bones are many
times longer in length than they are in width. Examples of these types
of bones can be found in your arms, legs, fingers and toes. Long bones
are not straight but curved, which gives the bone strength. These bones
are involved in locomotion and helps your limbs act as a lever and
support the weight of the trunk of your body.
Short Bones are about as tall as they are
wide and resemble a cube. Examples of these bones can be found in your
wrist and ankle. They are usually found in portions of the skeleton that
are used for rotation and strength, like the hand. The compressed and
short bones are joined by ligaments to help create movement.
Sesamoid Bones are a special type of
short bone, usually small, but are unique in that they are found inside
of a tendon. An example of a sesamoid bone is your patella
(kneecap).
