The
atmosphere is also responsible for the greenhouse effect. Some
atmospheric gases, especially carbon dioxide (CO2) absorb
heat, and keep the Earth’s surface warm. The Earth’s surface would
be very cold. The surface temperature would probably be lower than
freezing, so all water would be solid. Most life forms depend on liquid
water, so, without an atmosphere, it is unlikely that life would have
evolved on Earth.
The layering of the atmosphere through time, has
created a stable environment. Organisms have adapted and evolved to take
advantage of the gases needed for life that the atmosphere has to offer.
