ATMOSPHERE
Lesson 1 - Page 6

The atmosphere is also responsible for the greenhouse effect. Some atmospheric gases, especially carbon dioxide (CO2) absorb heat, and keep the Earth’s surface warm. The Earth’s surface would be very cold. The surface temperature would probably be lower than freezing, so all water would be solid. Most life forms depend on liquid water, so, without an atmosphere, it is unlikely that life would have evolved on Earth.

The layering of the atmosphere through time, has created a stable environment. Organisms have adapted and evolved to take advantage of the gases needed for life that the atmosphere has to offer.
