Environmental Interns is a high school service
internship sponsored by the Math Science Nucleus and funded by Alameda
County Flood Control and Water Conservation District. Over the course of
the program, students will explore different components of the wetland
ecosystems of Tule Ponds at Tyson Lagoon. Each day, they will engage in
hands-on experiments that allow them to interact directly with these
ecosystems, learning through real-world experience. Accepting
applications through April 15, notification April 30 if accepted.
Program Outline
Day One (August 3, 2026) - Introduction to Wetland
Ecosystem
Interns will be introduced to the wetland ecosystem
of Tule Ponds by learning the fundamentals of biological and geologic
assessments used to evaluate wetland structure, function, and condition.
Day Two (August 4, 2026) - Chemistry
Interns will investigate wetland chemistry through
systematic water sampling and analysis of parameters such as pH,
nutrient levels, and dissolved oxygen to assess ecosystem health.
Day Three (August 5, 2026) - Plants
Interns will conduct scientific explorations of
wetland plants, analyzing their adaptations, diversity, and role in
supporting the ecosystem.
Day Four (August 6, 2026) - Animals/Microorganisms
Interns will engage in field-based investigations
of wetland ecosystems, examining animal populations and microbial
communities to understand their roles in the ecological structure and
function.
Day Five (August 7, 2026) - Fossils/Conclusion
Interns will visit the Children's Natural History
Museum and explore the geologic history of Fremont through fossil
analysis, integrating paleontology with modern wetland science and
environmental assessment practices.
*This program offers a total of 25 community
service hours.
